Enthusiastic about commerce! − The new Kannattavakauppa.fi website compiles information about the positions and study paths in the sector
For most young people, applying for both summer jobs and higher education are the most significant spring-time events. The Finnish Commerce Federation, which represents companies and employers in the commerce sector, will present one of Finland’s largest industries in a diverse way on the website Kannattavakauppa.fi, which is designed to attract young people.
Spring is traditionally a time when different industries invest in their communications to appear more attractive to potential employees as, in April–May, thousands of young people leaving school reflect on their choices regarding both upper secondary and higher education. In addition, the search for summer jobs is at its height right now.
The new Kannattava kauppa website will not only support young people considering their potential fields, but also provide a source of information for the guidance counsellors and parents assisting young people.
“At Kannattavakauppa.fi, which was launched today, young people can find information about the retail sector and its diverse duties, the study paths to the sector, and interesting career stories of retail professionals. Through videos introducing different professions, they can also familiarise themselves with the tasks of people working in the sector,” says Pia Pere-Vanhanen, Communications Director at the Finnish Commerce Federation.
The Finnish Commerce Federation is using the site to compile content that highlights the attractiveness of the sector. The site is also being developed continuously, and new content is produced in cooperation with companies and sub-sectors of commerce. Kannattavakauppa.fi is part of the online service and website family of the Finnish Commerce Federation.
Problems in the availability of skilled labour are a challenge for companies in the commerce sector
Commerce is one of the largest industries and employers in the economy. Currently, commerce employs around 270,000 people. Commerce is also the largest employer of young people in Finland, as one in five employed young people works in a commerce sector company. Commerce companies are also a very important provider of summer jobs, year after year.
“In normal years, commerce has been able to provide up to 30,000 summer jobs across the country, and in 2022, the number of jobs is expected to return to the pre-pandemic level,” says Pere-Vanhanen.
Commerce is a diverse and extensive sector, offering a wide variety of jobs ranging from basic professions to expert, managerial and management positions. Digitalisation and automatisation, as well as the ever-increasing awareness of responsible business practices, have had a strong impact on the commerce sector, as the world is changing and the demands on companies and their employees’ skills are changing. This will also create new professions in the commerce sector, alongside and in place of traditional ones.
“Like other industries, the commerce sector is also suffering from problems in accessing skilled labour, especially in duties outside of the basic professional work. On the new website, we aim to respond to this problem by, for example, highlighting the diverse and interesting tasks in the field, as well as the prospects for the future,” says Pere-Vanhanen.
