Service Union United PAM announces more strikes in the commerce sector
On Sunday 29 January, PAM announced further industrial action in the commerce sector, even though the collective agreement negotiations are still ongoing and the first strikes have not even taken place yet. The latest strike warning on commerce sector warehouses covers 47 sites that employ some 4,000 people.
Service Union United PAM announced the first wave of strikes on 22 January. The first strikes will take place in the second week of February, starting on 6 February. According to the second strike warning by PAM, the strikes concerning commerce sector warehouses would take place after the first wave of strikes, starting at 5:00 a.m. on 13 February and ending at 5:00 a.m. on 16 February.
“The negotiations for the collective agreement are still ongoing, and the first strikes have not even taken place yet, but PAM is already announcing new industrial action. This is a harsh example of the change in the negotiating culture. Commerce sector employers cannot sit idly by and wait for new waves of strikes. Other approaches must be considered,” says Anna Lavikkala, Labour Market Director at the Finnish Commerce Federation.
“The employment situation in the commerce sector has already started to decline, and many stores have started change negotiations. The situation is already difficult for many stores. Furthermore, we must remember that consumers are also the ones who suffer in commerce strike situations,” Lavikkala says.
The mediation of labour disputes between the Finnish Commerce Federation and PAM will continue at the beginning of the week under the leadership of the National Conciliator.
